चालीसा काल का पहला सप्ताह
📒 पहला पाठ: योना का ग्रन्थ 3:1-10
1) प्रभु के वाणी योना को दूसरी बार यह कहते हुए सुनाई पडी,
2) ’’उठो! महानगर निनीवे जा कर वहाँ के लोगों को उपदेश दो, जैसा कि मैंने तुम्हें बताया है’’।
3) इस पर योना उठ खडा हुआ और प्रभु के आज्ञानुसार निनीवे चला गया। निनीवे एक बहुत बड़ा शहर था। उसे पार करने में तीन दिन लगते थे।
4) योना ने उस में प्रवेश किया और एक दिन की यात्रा पूरी करने के बाद वह इस प्रकार उपदेश देने, लगा ’’चालीस दिन के बाद निनीवे का विनाश किया जायेगा’’।
5) निनीवे के लोगों ने ईश्वर की बात पर विश्वास किया। उन्होंने उपवास की घोषणा की और बडों से लेकर छोटों तक सबों ने टाट ओढ लिया।
6) निनीवे के राजा ने यह खबर सुनी। उसने अपना सिंहासन छोड दिया, अपने वस्त्र उतार कर टाट पहन लिया और वह राख पर बैठ गया।
7) इसके बाद उसने निनीवे में यह आदेश घोषित किया, ’’यह राजा तथा उसके सामन्तों का आदेश है: चाहे मनुय हो या पशु, गाय-बैल हो या भेड-बकरी, कोई भी न तो खायेगा, न चरेगा और न पानी पियेगा।
8) सभी व्यक्ति टाट ओढ कर पूरी शक्ति से ईश्वर की दुहाई देंगे। सभी अपना कुमार्ग तथा अपने हाथों से होने वाले हिंसात्मक कार्य छोड दें।
9) क्या जाने ईश्वर द्रवित हो जाये, उसका क्रोध शान्त हो जाये और हमारा विनाश न हो’’।
10) ईश्वर ने देखा कि वे क्या कर रहे हैं और किस प्रकार उन्होंने कुमार्ग छोड दिया है, तो वह द्रवित हो गया और उसने जिस विपत्ति की धमकी दी थी, उसे उन पर नहीं आने दिया।
📙 सुसमाचार : सन्त लूकस 11:29-32
29) भीड़-की-भीड़ उनके चारों ओर उमड़ रही थी और वे कहने लगे, ’’यह एक विधर्मी पीढ़ी है। यह एक चिन्ह माँगती है, परन्तु नबी योनस के चिन्ह को छोड़ इसे और कोई चिन्ह नहीं दिया जायेगा।
30) जिस प्रकार योनस निनिवे-निवासियों के लिए एक चिन्ह बन गया था, उसी प्रकार मानव पुत्र भी इस पीढ़ी के लिए एक चिन्ह बन जायेगा।
31) न्याय के दिन दक्षिण की रानी इस पीढ़ी के लोगों के साथ जी उठेगी और इन्हें दोषी ठहरायेगी, क्योंकि वह सुलेमान की प्रज्ञा सुनने के लिए पृथ्वी के सीमान्तों से आयी थी, और देखो-यहाँ वह है, जो सुलेमान से भी महान् है!
32) न्याय के दिन निनिवे के लोग इस पीढ़ी के साथ जी उठेंगे और इसे दोषी ठहरायेंगे, क्योंकि उन्होंने योनस का उपदेश सुन कर पश्चात्ताप किया था, और देखो-यहाँ वह है, जो योनस से भी महान् है!
📚 मनन-चिंतन
आज का सुसमाचार, लूकस 11:29-32 हमें अपने जीवन में ईश्वर के आह्वान का जवाब देने के महत्व पर गहराई से चिंतन करने का निमंत्रण देता है, विशेषकर जब हम उपवास के मौसम के माध्यम से यात्रा करते हैं। येसु योना के चिन्ह के बारे में बात करते हैं, पश्चाताप और ईश्वर के संदेश के लिए खुलेपन की आवश्यकता पर ज़ोर देते हैं। हमारे व्यस्त जीवन में, ईश्वर के द्वारा प्रस्तुत किए गए चिन्हों का अनदेखा करना आसान है। नीनवे के लोगों ने योना की चेतावनी का पालन किया और पश्चाताप किया। उपवास हमें रुकने, चिंतन करने तथा ईश्वर की ओर मुडने का अवसर प्रदान करता है। आइए हम उनकी तरह न हों, जो चिन्हों की तलाश करते थे, लेकिन अपने बीच ईश्वर की उपस्थिति को पहचानने में विफल रहे। येसु ने दक्षिण की रानी को भी उजागर किया, जिसने सुलैमान के ज्ञान की तलाश की। उपवास हमारे लिए एक ऐसा समय है, जब हम प्रार्थना, शास्त्र, और चिंतन के माध्यम से ज्ञान की तलाश करते हैं, जब हम उपवास के माध्यम से अपने आप को इनकार करते हैं और भिक्षा-दान को अपनाते हैं। हम याद रखते हैं कि सच्चा ज्ञान हमारे जीवन को ईश्वर की इच्छा के साथ संरेखित करने से आता है। येसु चेतावनी देते हैं कि उसके समय के लोग वर्तमान पीढ़ी को उसे न पहचानने के लिए दोषी ठहराएंगे। आइए हम यह गलती दोहराएं नहीं। अपनी उपवास की यात्रा में, हम अपने दिलों को मसीह के लिए खोलें, उसे पवित्र वचन और जरूरतमंदों के चेहरों में पहचानें। जब हम इस चालीसा काल में ईश्वर के आह्वान का जवाब देते हैं, तो हमारा पश्चाताप सच्चा हो, हमारी ज्ञान की तलाश ईमानदार हो, और मसीह की हमारी पहचान गहरी हो। आइए हम एक ऐसी पीढ़ी न हों, जो ईश्वर के प्रेम और कृपा के चिन्हों को खो देती है। यह चालीसा एक कृपा, परिवर्तन, और मसीह के शिष्य के रूप में जीने के लिए एक नवीन प्रतिबद्धता का समय हो।

📚 REFLECTION
Today’s Gospel from Luke 11:29-32 invites us to reflect on the importance of responding to God’s call in our lives, especially as we journey through the season of Lent. Jesus speaks about the sign of Jonah, emphasizing the need for repentance and openness to God’s message.
In our busy lives, it’s easy to overlook the signs God presents to us. The people of Nineveh heeded Jonah’s warning and repented. Lent provides us with a similar opportunity to pause, reflect, and turn our hearts back to God. Let us not be like those who sought signs but failed to recognize God’s presence in their midst. Jesus also highlights the Queen of the South who sought the wisdom of Solomon. Lent is a time for us to seek wisdom through prayer, Scripture, and reflection. As we deny ourselves through fasting and embrace almsgiving, let us remember that true wisdom comes from aligning our lives with God’s will.
Jesus warns that the people of His time would condemn the current generation for not recognizing Him. Let us not repeat this mistake. In our Lenten journey, may we open our hearts to Christ, recognizing Him in the Eucharist, in the Scriptures, and the faces of those in need.
As we respond to God’s call this Lent, may our repentance be sincere, our seeking of wisdom earnest, and our recognition of Christ profound. Let us not be a generation that misses the signs of God’s love and mercy. May this Lent be a time of grace, transformation, and a renewed commitment to live as disciples of Christ.

📚 मनन-चिंतन -2
प्रभु ईश्वर अपने कार्यों को पूरा करने के लिए हमारे ही बीच में से कुछ लोगों को चुन लेते हैं जिनके द्वारा वह अपना संदेश लोगों तक पहुँचा सके। आज के दोनों पाठों में नबी योनस एवं निनिवे शहर का जिक्र किया गया है। प्रभु ईश्वर अपना संदेश निनिवे के लोगों के पास पहुँचाने के लिए नबी योनस को भेजते हैं। नबी योनस इस कार्य से दूर भागना चाहतें थे। लेकिन प्रभु ईश्वर उसे निनिवे तक पहुँचा देते हैं। नबी एवं निनिवे के लोगों ने वहाँ पर प्रभु ईश्वर की असीम कृपा और दया का अनुभव किया।
प्रभु येसु भी सुसमाचार में इस बात का जिक्र करते हैं। नबी योनस के चिन्ह का छोड़ कर कोई दूसरा चिन्ह नही दिया जायेगा। जिस प्रकार योनस निनिवे के निवासियों के लिए एक चिन्ह बन गया था, उसी प्रकार स्वयं प्रभु येसु आज हमारे लिए मुक्ति का एक चिन्ह बन गये। चिन्ह अदर्श्य ओ दर्श्य बनाता है। प्रभु येसु अदर्श्य ईश्वर का दृश्य रूप हैं। कलोसियों को लिखते हुए संत पौलुस कहते हैं, “ईसा मसीह अदृश्य ईश्वर के प्रतिरूप तथा समस्त सृष्टि के पहलौठे हैं” (कलोसियों 1:15)। यह एक ऐसा चिन्ह है जो सदा-सर्वदा बना रहेगा, और इस चिन्ह के द्वारा हमें जीवन प्राप्त होगा।

📚 REFLECTION
Lord God chooses some people from among us to fulfil his tasks, through whom he can convey his message to the people. Prophet Jonah and the city of Nineveh are mentioned in both the readings. The Lord God sends the prophet Jonah to convey his message to the people of Nineveh. Prophet Jonah wanted to run away from this task. But the Lord God takes him to Nineveh. The prophet and the people of Nineveh experienced the infinite grace and mercy of the Lord God there.
Lord Jesus mentions this incident in the Gospel. No other sign will be given except the sign of prophet Jonah. Just as Jonah became a sign for the people of Nineveh, so the Lord Jesus himself became a sign of salvation for us today. A sign makes the invisible visible. Lord Jesus is the visible form of the invisible God. Saint Paul, writing to the Colossians, says, “Jesus Christ is the image of the invisible God and the firstborn of all creation” (Colossians 1:15). It is a sign that will last forever, and through this sign we will have life.

पुराना नियम मसीह के बारे में भविष्यवाणियों और संकेतों से भरा है। फिर भी येसु के समय के कुछ लोग येसु से चिन्ह माँगते रहे। मसीह के रूप में प्रभु येसु की पहचान को उन्होंने इसलिए अस्वीकार नहीं किया कि संकेतों की कमी थी, बल्कि इसलिए कि वे येसु में जो सच्चाई थी उसे स्वीकार करने के लिए खुले नहीं थे। मत्ती 12:40 योना के चिन्ह को संदर्भित करता है जब प्रभु येसु कहते हैं, “जिस प्रकार योनस तीन दिन और तीन रात मच्छ के पेट में रहा, उसी प्रकार मानव पुत्र भी तीन दिन और तीन रात पृथ्वी के गर्भ में रहेगा।"। आज के सुसमाचार में हमें और एक संकेत देखने को मिलता है जो आसन्न आपदा के बारे में योना की भविष्यवाणी से जुड़ा है जो पश्चाताप नहीं करने पर लोगों पर आने वाला था। नीनवे के लोगों ने योना के उपदेश पर पश्चाताप किया। उसी प्रकार येसु की शिक्षा सुन कर लोगों को पश्चात्ताप करना चाहिए। मत्ती 21:43 में येसु ने उन्हें चेतावनी दी, "इसलिए मैं तुम लोगों से कहता हूँ - स्वर्ग का राज्य तुम से ले लिया जायेगा और ऐसे राष्ट्रों को दिया जायेगा, जो इसका उचित फल उत्पन्न करेगा।” येसु हमें पश्चाताप करने और विश्वास करने के लिए बुलाते हैं।

📚 REFLECTION
The Old Testament is full of prophecies and signs about the Messiah. Yet some people of Jesus’ times kept on asking for signs from Jesus. It was not because of the lack of signs that these people did not accept Jesus as the Messiah, but because they were not open to the truth in Jesus. They were not willing to accept the truth before them. Mt 12:40 refers to sign of Jonah when he says, “For just as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the sea monster, so for three days and three nights the Son of Man will be in the heart of the earth”. In today’s Gospel we have another sign connected to the preaching of Jonah about the impending disaster unless they repented. The people of Nineveh repented at the preaching of Jonah. People need to repent at the preaching of Jesus. In Mt 21:43 Jesus warned them, “Therefore I tell you, the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people that produces the fruits of the kingdom”. Jesus calls us to repent and believe.

नबी इसायाह ने येसु के बारे में भविष्यवाणी करते हुये उन्हें, ’’अपूर्व परामर्शदाता, शक्तिशाली ईश्वर, शाश्वत पिता, शान्ति का राजा’’ जैसे अभूतपूर्व संज्ञाओं से नवाजा। लोग येसु की शिक्षा सुनकर चकित रह जाते थे। वे येसु के धर्मग्रंथ के ज्ञान की गहराई, उनके उत्तर, बुद्धि तत्परता, लोगों की समझ आदि से आश्चर्य में पड जाते थे। ’’सब उनकी प्रशंसा करते रहे। वे उनके मनोहर शब्द सुन कर अचम्भे में पड़ जाते और कहते थे।’’ (लूकस 4:22)
येसु उन्हें अधिकार के साथ शिक्षा देते थे। ’’...लोग उनकी शिक्षा पर आश्चर्यचकित थे, क्योंकि वे उनके शास्त्रियों की तरह नहीं बल्कि अधिकार के साथ शिक्षा देते थे’’(मत्ती 7:28-29)। येसु उन्हें शक्ति और सामर्थ्य के साथ सिखाते थे, ’’सब चकित रह गये और आपस में कहते रहे, ’यह क्या है? यह तो नये प्रकार की शिक्षा है। वे अधिकार के साथ बोलते हैं। वे अशुद्ध आत्माओं को भी आदेश देते हैं और वे उनकी आज्ञा मानते हैं।’’ (मारकुस 1:27) येसु उन्हें बडे ज्ञान से शिक्षा देते थे, ’’यहूदी अचम्भे में पड़ कर कहते थे, ’इसने कभी पढ़ा नहीं। इसे यह ज्ञान कहाँ से प्राप्त हुआ?’’(योहन 7:15)
लेकिन इन सब आत्म-प्रमाणों के बावजूद भी उन्होंने येसु में विश्वास नहीं किया। येसु के प्रति उनकी प्रशंसा उनके विश्वास में तब्दील नहीं हो सकी। इसके विपरीत सुलेमान की मानवीय प्रज्ञा को उसकी पीढी के लोगों ने माना यहॉ तक कि सुदूर दक्षिण से रानी शिबा उनकी प्रज्ञा को सुनने आयी थी।
येसु ने पश्चाताप की शिक्षा दी। अपने वचनों तथा कार्यों के द्वारा येसु उनके जीवन को बदल रहे थे तथा उनके हृदयों को ईश्वर की ओर अभिमुख कर रहे थे। ’’उस समय से ईसा उपदेश देने और यह कहने लगे, पश्चात्ताप करो। स्वर्ग का राज्य निकट आ गया है।’’ (मत्ती 4:17) उन्होंने लोगों को उनके आगमन का कारण तथा उद्देश्य बताया, ’’मैं धर्मियों को नहीं, पापियों को पश्चाताप के लिए बुलाने आया हूँ।’’ (लूकस 5:32) उन्होंने उस समय की महत्ता के बारे में उन्हें आगाह किया, ’’समय पूरा हो चुका है। ईश्वर का राज्य निकट आ गया है। पश्चाताप करो और सुसमाचार में विश्वास करो।’’(मारकुस 1:15)
इसके बावजूद भी लोगों ने विश्वास नहीं किया। उन्होंने कोई न कोई बहाना बनाकर तथा उसमें कमियां बताकर पश्चाताप से बचना चाहा। हालांकि कुछ ने विश्वास किया किन्तु अधिकांश लोग हठी बने रहे। इसकी तुलना में नीनेवे के लोगों को येसु के द्वारा तथा इतने विस्तृत रूप से पश्चाताप का संदेश नहीं दिया गया था किन्तु फिर भी उन्होंने नबी योना के कहने पर महान पश्चाताप किया। येसु के चमत्कारों तथा उपदेश के बाद भी उनकी पीढी के लोगों ने उन्हें अस्वीकार किया। अपने इसी हठधर्मिता के कारण वे येसु द्वारा निंदित किये गये।

📚 REFLECTION
Isaiah prophesied Jesus as, “Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace” (Isaiah 9:6). People were astonished at Jesus’ teaching. They were moved with the depth of his scriptural knowledge, apt wits, presence of mind and understanding of people. They themselves used to express their appreciation and admiration. “All spoke well of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his mouth.” (Luke 4:22).
Jesus taught them with authority. “…The crowds were astounded at his teaching, for he taught them as one having authority, and not as their scribes” (Matthew 7:28-29). He taught them with power and might. “They were all amazed, so that they debated among themselves, saying, "What is this? A new teaching with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey Him." (Mark 1:27) Jesus taught with great knowledge. “The Jews were astonished at it, saying, ‘How does this man have such learning, when he has never been taught?’ (John 7:15).
In spite of all these self-evidences they didn’t believe in him. And for most the admiration could not enable them to perceive his life-giving teaching. While Solomon’s human wisdom was recognised by the people of his generation and held in great admiration even by a pagan queen Sheeba who came from far south.
Jesus also preached repentance. By his words and deeds, he was transforming life and setting their hearts towards heaven. “…Jesus began to preach, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near” (Mt.4:17). He told the purpose of his coming, “I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.” (5:32) He warned them about the importance of the time, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent, and believe in the gospel.” (Mark 1:15)
Yet people did not repent. They tried to look for loopholes or some excuses. There were some who responded but a majority of them didn’t turn their hearts to God and his message. However, people of Nineveh did not have the privilege to listen to the message so extensively from the Lord yet they had responded promptly and properly to the call of ‘repentance’ by prophet Jonah. Jesus who was embodiment of Wisdom and who was the Lord of conversion was rejected by his generation, that too, in spite of many signs and wonders. Hence for their very act of stubbornness they stood condemned by the Lord.
