क्रिसमस उपहारों के आदान-प्रदान का समय है। प्रभु येसु मसीह के जन्म के समय ईश्वर ने मानव को कई उपहार दिए। क्रिसमस का सबसे बड़ा उपहार है चरनी में जन्मे ईश्वर का रहस्य। यहाँ चरनी के असहाय बच्चे में क्रिसमस का सबसे बड़ा रहस्य है। यहूदी लोगों की पूजा के केंद्र, यरूसालेम के मंदिर में येसु का जन्म नहीं हुआ था; न तो वे किसी राजमहल में और न ही किसी अमीर या प्रभावशाली परिवार में जन्म लेते हैं। वे यरूशलेम या किसी प्रसिद्ध शहर में पैदा नहीं हुए थे, लेकिन एक छोटे शहर के बाहरी इलाके में। उन्हें यूसुफ और मरियम के नम्र घर में भी पैदा होने का भी अवसर नहीं मिला था। उन्होंने बेथलेहेम के बाहरी इलाके में एक गोशाले में पैदा होना पसंद किया। प्रभु हमें यह बताना चाहते हैं कि वे ऐसे व्यक्तियों और स्थानों में मौजूद हैं जहाँ हम उनसे मिलने का कम से कम उम्मीद करते हैं। कोई आश्चर्य नहीं कि उन्होंने मूसा के सामने मरुभूमि में एक जलती हुई झाड़ी में खुद को प्रकट करना पसंद किया। वे रेगिस्तान में हागार को दिखाई दिये। वे कुएँ और बंदीगृह में यूसुफ के साथ थे। वे सिंहों के खड्ड में दानिएल के साथ थे। प्रभु येसु के अनुसार, ईश्वर भूखे, प्यासे, नग्न, कैदियों, अपरिचितों और बीमारों में उपस्थित हैं। हमें अपने आस-पास ईश्वर की अनुपम और अगोचर उपस्थिति के बारे में लगातार जागरूक रहने की आवश्यकता है। संत योहन कहते हैं, "ईश्वर ने संसार को इतना प्यार किया कि उसने इसके लिए अपने एकलौते पुत्र को अर्पित कर दिया, जिससे जो उस में विश्वास करता हे, उसका सर्वनाश न हो, बल्कि अनन्त जीवन प्राप्त करे।" (योहन 3:16)। इस प्रकार हमने प्रभु ईश्वर के स्व-उपहार का अनुभव किया है जो हमें क्रिसमस पर दिया गया है। अन्य सभी उपहार इस स्व-उपहार के उपोत्पाद हैं।

क्रिसमस का दूसरा उपहार मोक्ष (Salvation) है। प्रभु येसु मनुष्यों को उद्धार का अवसर प्रदान करते हैं। येसु में प्रभु ईश्वर ने उन सब कार्यों को पूरा किया जो मानवता के उद्धार के लिए आवश्यक हैं। प्रभु येसु में हमारा उद्धार है। लेकिन हमारे निजी जीवन में इस मुक्ति का अनुभव करने के लिए, हम में से प्रत्येक को पापों से मुक्त होना चाहिए और येसु के साथ एक होना चाहिए। सभी मनुष्यों को येसु में मुक्ति का अनुभव करने के लिए आमंत्रित किया जाता है। मोक्ष का यह अनुभव 'ईश्वर का राज्य' कहा जाता है। चरवाहों, जोतिषियों, सिमयोन और अन्ना ने उस आमंत्रण का सकारात्मक जवाब दिया और उनसे मिलने या उनका इंतजार करने के लिए कष्टों को झेला।

क्रिसमस का एक और उपहार है - प्यार। सेंट जॉन कहते हैं, "पिता ने हमें कितना प्यार किया है! हम ईश्वर की सन्तान कहलाते हैं" (1योहन 3: 1)। हमारे लिए अपना एकलौते बेटे को भेजकर, उन्होंने हमें दिखाया है कि वे हमसे कितना प्यार करते हैं।

खुशी भी क्रिसमस का एक प्रमुख उपहार है। प्रभु के दूत ने येसु के जन्म के समय चरवाहों के सामने घोषणा की, "डरिए नहीं। देखिए, मैं आप को सभी लोगों के लिए बड़े आनन्द का सुसमाचार सुनाता हूँ। आज दाऊद के नगर में आपके मुक्तिदाता, प्रभु मसीह का जन्म हुआ है।“ (लूकस 2:10-11) सोत्र 16:11 में हम पढ़ते हैं, “तू मुझे जीवन का मार्ग दिखायेगा, तेरे साथ रह कर परिपूर्ण आनन्द प्राप्त होता है और तेरे दाहिने सदा के लिए सुख-शान्ति।” संत पेत्रुस कहते हैं, “आपने उन्हें कभी नहीं देखा, फिर भी आप उन्हें प्यार करते हैं। आप अब भी उन्हें नहीं देखते, फिर भी उन में विश्वास करते हैं। जब आप अपने विश्वास का प्रतिफल अर्थात् अपनी आत्मा की मुक्ति प्राप्त करेंगे, तो एक अकथनीय तथा दिव्य उल्लास से आनन्दित हो उठेंगे।" (1पेत्रुस 1: 8-9)

क्रिसमस का एक और उपहार शांति है। लूकस 2:14 में, हम स्वर्गदूतों को बेथलेहेम में येसुके जन्म के समय गाते हुए पाते हैं, "सर्वोच्च स्वर्ग में ईश्वर की महिमा प्रकट हो और पृथ्वी पर उसके कृपापात्रों को शान्ति मिले!" बाद में, उनके सार्वजनिक जीवन के दौरान येसु कई बार कहते हैं, "तुम्हें शान्ति मिले" (लूकस 24:36, योहन 20:21)। योहन 14:27 में वे कहते हैं , “मैं तुम्हारे लिये शांति छोड जाता हूँ। अपनी शांति तुम्हें प्रदान करता हूँ। वह संसार की शांति-जैसी नहीं है।“

पाप क्षमा भी क्रिसमस का एक उपहार है। येसु ने खुद को एक ऐसे व्यक्ति के रूप में प्रस्तुत किया जो मानव का ईश्वर के साथ मेलमिलाप कराने के लिए आये थे। उन्होंने इस अंत के लिए अपना जीवन अर्पित कर दिया। "ईश्वर ने मनुष्यों के अपराध उनके ख़र्चे में न लिख कर मसीह के द्वारा अपने साथ संसार का मेल कराया और हमें इस मेल-मिलाप के सन्देश का प्रचार सौंपा है।" (2कुरिन्थियों 5:19)। क्रिसमस का त्योहार हमें सूचित करता है कि ईश्वर दयालु हैं और धैर्यपूर्वक हमारी वापसी का इंतजार कर रहे हैं। प्रभु की क्षमा को हमारे द्वारा स्वतंत्रता के रूप में भी अनुभव किया जाता है।

वास्तव में क्रिसमस हमारे लिए अनगिनत उपहार लाता है - जैसे मुक्ति, शक्ति, दिशा की भावना इत्यादि। क्रिसमस का वास्तविक उत्सव हम से अपेक्षा रखता है कि हम इनमें से कम से कम कुछ उपहारों का अनुभव करें।

Gifts of Christmas

Christmas is a time to exchange gifts. At the time of the actual birth of Christ God gave many gifts to human beings.

The Greatest gift of Christmas is the Mystery of God in the Manger. Here in the seemingly helpless child of the manger is the Greatest Mystery of Christmas. Jesus was not born in the temple of Jerusalem, the centre of worship of the Jewish people; nor was he born in the royal palace, not even in any wealthy or influential family. He was not born in Jerusalem or any well-known town, but in a small town. He did not even have the comfort of being born in the humble home of Joseph and Mary. He chose to be born in a manger in the outskirts of Bethlehem. The Lord wants to communicate to us that he is present in persons and places we least expect. No wonder he chose to reveal himself to Moses in a burning bush in the wilderness. He appeared to Hagar in the desert. He was with Joseph in the well and in prison. He was with Daniel in the Lion’s den. According to Jesus, God is present in the hungry, the thirsty, the naked, the prisoners, the strangers and the sick. We need to be constantly aware of the unassuming and inconspicuous presence of God around us. St. John says, “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life” (Jn 3:16). Thus we have God’s self-gift offered to us at Christmas. All other gifts are by-products of this self-gift.

The second gift of Christmas is Salvation. God offers a possibility of salvation to human beings in Jesus. In Jesus God accomplished what is required for the salvation of humanity. In Jesus we have salvation. But to experience this salvation in our personal lives, each of us should be freed from sin and be united with him. All human beings are invited to experience salvation in Jesus. This experience of Salvation is what is termed as ‘Kingdom of God’. The shepherds, the wise men from the east, Simeon and Anna responded positively to that invitation and took the trouble to go to meet him or to wait for him.

Another gift of Christmas is love. St. John says, “See what love the Father has given us that we should be called children of God; and that is what we are” (1Jn 3:1). By sending us his own only-begotten Son, he has shown us how much he loves us.

Joy is another major gift of Christmas. The angel of the Lord announced to the shepherds at the time of the birth of Jesus, “I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people: to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is the Messiah, the Lord” (Lk 2:10-11). In Ps 16:11 we read, “You show me the path of life. In your presence there is fullness of joy; in your right hand are pleasures forevermore” (Ps 16:11). St. Peter says, “Although you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and rejoice with an indescribable and glorious joy, for you are receiving the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls.” (1Pet 1:8-9)

Another gift of Christmas is Peace. In Lk 2:14 we see the angels singing at the time of the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem, “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace among those whom he favors!” Later, during his public ministry Jesus would greet the disciples “Peace be with you” (Lk 24:36, Jn 20:21). In Jn 14:27 Jesus says, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives”.

Yet another gift of Christmas is forgiveness. Jesus presented himself as one who came to reconcile human beings to God. He offered his own life for this end. “In Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting the message of reconciliation to us” (2Cor 5:19). The feast of Christmas communicates to us that God is merciful to us and is patiently awaiting our return to him. Forgiveness of the Lord is also experienced as freedom by us.

In fact Christmas brings us innumerable gifts – like liberation, strength, sense of direction and so forth. A real celebration of Christmas implies us that we experience at least some of these gifts.
